Meredith G. Williams, Jr. (Feb 5, 1924 - June 29, 2012)
Meredith was born in Weymouth, MA and graduated from Bridgewater High School in Bridgewater, MA; class valedictorian, then attended Bates College earning a B.S. in Physics and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa fraternity. He also studied Navy Pre-Radar training at
Princeton University and at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology.
During WWII, Meredith was assigned as Electronics Repair Officer to the Pacific Fleet on the USS Yosemite, a destroyer tender stationed in Sasebo Harbor, Japan. In 1947, Meredith returned to civilian life and was first hired as an Oceanographic Technician at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. He entered Civil Service as an Oceanographer, then Physicist in 1948 for the Research Section of the Sonar Branch, Bureau of Ships where he led a full and rewarding career with the U.S. Navy Department, retiring in 1980 as
Head of the Nucleonics Branch.
Meredith was an avid wordsmith. Influenced by the multitude of acronyms in the Navy, he created the word “bacronym” in 1970.

In April 2012, the word was used on the television show
“Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” as a multiple-choice answer.

Williams of Potomac, Maryland, to cover the likes of GEORGE (Georgetown Environmentalists Organization against Rats, Garbage, and Emissions) and NOISE (Neighbors Opposed to Irritating Sound Emissions)."
